The Craftsmanship Behind Bar Skittles:
Each skittle is meticulously hand-crafted with a blend of traditional craftsmanship and precision. Every skittle is turned from solid boxwood, carefully selected for its durability and aesthetic appeal, in his workshop in the Northamptonshire countryside. John meticulously creates individual perfectly balanced skittles that ensure an authentic playing skill. The elegant design and smooth finish of the skittles not only enhances gameplay but also adds a touch of sophistication to any setting.
1. Wood Selection: Only premium-quality boxwood (boxus boxus) known for its strength, is used in the hand-turning process for creating the skittles.
2. Turning: John Pepper uses traditional woodturning (on his trusty old lathe, which was made in 1898) to shape the skittles and cheeses to precise specifications. They are all turned hand-and-eye, just being checked with callipers.
3. Finishing: Skittles and cheeses are sanded to perfection, creating a smooth surface that feels great in the hand.
4. Staining: The skittles are hand-varnished 3 times to enhance their visual appeal and protect the wood.
5. Quality Control: Every skittle undergoes quality checks to meet exacting standards before it's passed over to the customer.
1. Hood/Table Skittles: The skittles are placed on a hooded table, hence the name "hood skittles". The hood skittles table is leather bound, and has leather-cushioned rails on the sides and to the back, along with a curved hood of leather or netting stretched up from the rear.
2. Nine Pins: This name hearkens back to the origins of the game, which was traditionally played with nine pins.
3. Indoor Skittles: Emphasising its suitability for indoor play, especially in pubs and taverns.
4. Pub Skittles: Highlighting its popularity as a social game often played in pubs and clubs across the UK.
